Job Description
Volunteer with us and see what goes into making show magic happen.
As one of the biggest providers of arts and culture in the city, the Hippodrome provides over a million people a year with “goosebumps” moments through our on- and off-stage programmes and performances. Long recognised as one of the UK’s premier presenting theatres, the past five years have seen Birmingham Hippodrome develop into a creative producing organisation focused on access, diversity and inclusion, doubling our impact to match our annual audience of 550,000 with a further 450,000 people engaged via festivals, learning, participation and produced work.
From award winning shows to our famous pantomime, we are creating a world-class cultural scene for our region, and you can be part of it!
About the role:
Volunteering with us is a unique experience in an environment where no two days are the same. Our Front of House Volunteer Programme is a fantastic way to build confidence, gain skills, make new friends, and be part of the magic that is theatre. It is a great way to help your local community too.
As a valued member of the Front of House team, you will provide a warm welcome to visitors as well as deliver excellent customer service across all front of house areas. Whether you are checking tickets, giving directions, supervising the audience during the performance, or selling programmes, you will ensure customers enjoy an amazing experience that will make them want to come back for more. You will work as part of a cheerful team and ensure safety by following set procedures and processes. We will also look to you to feed back any issues or problems, so we can respond quickly and continue to delight visitors.
You will receive full training in every aspect of the volunteer role, including as a Fire and Evacuation Marshall, so you will be able to safely evacuate all areas of the building including all areas of the auditorium.
About you:
All volunteers are given amazing support by experienced colleagues, as well as thorough on-the-job training. Specific experience is not a must-have, but experience of customer service or working in a public building would be beneficial.
What we are looking for is a friendly nature as well as excellent communication and interpersonal skills. You will be the sort of person who can adapt to change, enjoys working as part of a team, and can use their initiative when needed. Of course, you will enjoy dealing with the public.
If that sounds like you, we are looking for volunteers who can join us at least once a week within a 4-week period. If you can, we would be delighted to hear from you.
In return for your commitment, you will have the chance to work for one of the country's leading venues, receive training in all areas of Front of House, and be able to take advantage of staff special offers.
How to apply:
To become part of the Hippodrome family and enjoy a new stage for your skills please apply online. Recognising under-representation in our workforce of Black, Asian, and ethnically diverse people, and those with disabilities, we particularly welcome applicants from those backgrounds and identities.
